Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I got this 11.5 inch red ear in a pond less than 10 miles from my house today on a grey 1/32 oz thread-bodied jig tied by LedHed. This is my PR for Maryland waters.

Thanks, Sonny!

A thread -bodied jig is a jig where the body is made up of wound thread through its entire length. Go to jigcraft.com and check out some of LedHeds, and others, work on these great lures.

Whats a thread-bodied jig?

Hey Jim

Finally got back on. Congrats on your RE - nice catch - and your welcome. Looks like that jig works from coast to coast.

We been getting some really nice fish also - season started early (gonna be a good year for pigs)!

Been using a custom 1/32nd football with a #8 or #6 Matzuo sickle tipped with half a crawler and getting some really nice RE. Tyed up a new pattern, CK3, using the football - really cool jig and it catches.

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys!

Interesting fish... I caught it in a pond that I had not previously taken any red ears from and that had been drained about 8 years ago, so this fish was clearly a 'stocked' fish when they redid the pond back then. The photo doesn't show the thickness across the back of this girl. Nothing like the Savannah River giants, but a big fish for Maryland waters.

Jeff...yes, the jig had red eyes and I tipped it with a tiny piece of garden worm and wind-drifted it throughout shallow areas of the pond. Matt and I got one other RE, about 9 inches, along with 30 or so gills and a few bass on both LedHeds' and my jigs. Great day!

Wow beautiful fish Jim!  Congrats!  Did the jig have red eyes?  If so, it's one of my favorites that LedHed ties.  Did you tip the jig with any bait or trailer?  I'm going out with LedHed this Tuesday to Lake Perris because the big Redears are on the bite. Can't wait!
