I'm gonna head up there to Deep Step when I get my kayak and do a little dredging. I'll find out what them suckers are eatin'.

Ive always wanted to fish around the Fall Line, too, just south of Deep Step on the river. I needs me a kayak.... :-)

Makes one wonder if they could get a population of snails or clams going in their pond if they could grow such a fish.

Would make a nice experiment, just not sure how long it would take to do so.

This is clearly an astonishing fish, a freak, but lends credence to the possibility that the Savannah River system may one day produce a fish that will surpass the 5-7 giant from the Diversion Canal of the Santee Cooper system. It is nice to know that a world record is a possibility in this day and age.

There is most likely a snail, clam or crustasean abundance in this system that would fuel such giant fish.

It's all good folks. Incredible fish. What do you suppose it was eating? Are there zebra mussels in the area?

I have to side with Bill that questioning the validity of something like this is a knee-jerk reaction that springs from less than the best of human impulses - I have to say, it's a little frustrating, especially since a person with specific, firsthand knowledge of the situation and a highly-respected member on this site (Bill) has already vouched for the authenticity of the catch...And another, at least somewhat respected (moi) member who happens to have worked professionally as a photographer (didn't mention that before, didn't think it would be needed) has stated that it looks not to have been altered...

One of the first things anyone who takes a beginning photography class learns is how quickly large objects become very small just by moving the camera a short distance from the object.  If you were to look at any  photo of a fish, in which another person were standing a few feet in the background, the person in the background would look similarly small in relation to the fish - Photography 101...

Bill,

I certainly hope the photo is authentic, I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers either. I just happened to read some comments below about the possibility that it's a fake and my skeptical eye took over when closely looking at the photo from all angles.

Redear are by far my favorite fish in the world, nothing I've caught compares to their beauty and fight/pull as your reeling them in to the boat. I of all people would be disappointed if these were a fake deal. These fish have superior genetics to bluegill and crappie IMO.

@ Troy.....The man in the background is standing 7-8ft away.....the boat is even farther.

Please use the mans thumb for a size reference. Before you let your skepticism, and or jealousy get the best of you, keep in mind that this fish was weighed on a certified scale shortly after capture @ 5lbs 3oz

....or the guy has the smallest hands in the history of the world. LOL

@Troy:

The guy in the background does seem awfully nonchalant for being in the presence of what might be the biggest bream in the history of the world...
