Yep.  That explains it.

Cattle do use the pond as well as my pigs. We don't drink the water. I pump out of it to water the vegetable garden and my little brothers swim in it often.

Mathew, by any chance, do cattle use that pond as a water source?  Or is it strictly a water source for humans?

Where I live, we have "Farm ponds" everywhere.  Build a dam on a small creek, let it fill with water, and the cattle that the rancher raises will use it to drink and cool off.  Lots of times, the cattle are wading into the water to cool off in the heat of summer.  Farm ponds like this are known having Bass that you can literally catch between your legs.  They're so used big critters standing in the water......

"Wood, Weed and Stone." Sounds pretty awesome!

The bass that is shown with me in the recent ice fishing photo took a size 14 ice jig tipped with spikes, vertically jigged through an 8" diameter hole......it doesn't always require a big, lively bait to catch a top-end predator.

Theres an old adage that says, "Dont fish over the head, of the fish at your feet."

Start close and work your way out, in other words. Think cover and places to shelter from the sun and predators, what I like to call, "Wood, Weed and Stone."

Thanks for the casting tips! Now that I know that I can go fish some dams that I could never before. I never even thought of using bait or using it as a pole. I guess I thought you had to cast far to get fish, I was proved wrong yesterday though. I was standing knee deep in the water trying to cast, when I looked down and next to my leg was a large bass!

The smallest fly I can say Ive caught a bass on was a G&H Sedge (Goddard and Henry), aka "Goddard Caddis."

http://thefeatherbender.com/2014/01/12/fly-tying-course-19-the-g-h-...

It was about size 16.

At the time, I didn't know what the fly was. It was among many in a box I picked up on ebay. I wanted the box - the flies were icing on  the cake. I don;t know anything about stillwater trout flies, either. Only quite recently did I learn anything about this particular fly.

As luck would have it, I still have the fly. But, I guess the bass didn't know it was a dinky little trout fly. I still wonder just what he thought it was.

Nice Bass!

You would be surprised what flies I've caught Bass on.  From some big size 2 Gurgle-Pops, all the way down to some size 12 Scuds (both of which I'm sending).
