The smell during the summer time can be bodacious. During our visit, there was already an strong odor of rotting plant matters, fused with the saltiness of the water. My coworkers and friends visit the site during late fall and mid winter. The smell was horrifying from the eutrophication and organic decay in the dead of the heat, or the decay smell of dead fish. The local agency respond very rapidly in removing the millions of dead corpses to a retention area downwind, minimizing the putrification scents filling the park areas.

Greg, that's a place called the Salton Sea, in southern California's Imperial Valley.  Much of the area is below sea level, which is how the Salton Sea got to be there in the first place, when flooding in the early 20th century overwhelmed the headgates of a canal on the Colorado River. Water poured through, enough to create the Salton Sea.

It was originally freshwater but has become highly saline over the years, so much so that other ocean fish that were stocked there are now believed to be all gone, with only the tilapia surviving. There used to be a thriving corvina fishery in the Sea, and one or two other complimentary species as well. Now the tilapia run the joint, with nothing to control their numbers except maybe the odd pelican or cormorant.

There were once tons of housing and resort developments around the Sea, back in the sixties and seventies. I remember having dinner with my parents at the Salton Bay Yacht Club restaurant when I was 10 or so.  That's all gone now, and IIRC some of it was even submerged by rising water levels. I hear the place gets pretty smelly in summer these days, which is one reason why all that development tanked.

LOL Greg, it was Salton Sea. It's known as the most polluted lake for fishery in the US, but know, it's one of the cleanest comparing to the local lakes. It's a very unique lake. I pray that the lake will receive bigger funding as the economy recovers to reduce the total salinity level even further to support other species of fish. There is so much nutrient here to support and nourish monstrous fishes.

That's too funny, Leo!  Looks like you made it out to the Sea, how was the fishing?

LOL!! Greg spotted last night and joked about it. She went to Victoria Secrets several times in the past few months, and I treated her to shopping sprees for our anniversary, Valentines, and early Mother's day. Well, after seeing the photo my son took, as she was wearing the black "booby satin fly" I made for her fly rodding fun, I have to point out..live Victoria's Secret' booby fly delivered as promised. LOL.
