Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Ultra light slip bobber setup for bluegill
1) 5-1/2 ft Celilo spinng rod for shallow and 6-1/2 ft for deeper water and crappies
2) LS100 Lew Laser spin reels w extra spools. i use these reels on all my slip bobber setups. These reels are a bit beefier than the micro spin type reels and balance nicely even with the longer rods.
3) i love the Spider Wire stealth braid in bright yellow as my first choice at 8# test with a mono diameter of 1.5# i have no problem battling and landing an occasional smallmouth. i have spare spools with green braid as well as 4# Suffix Elite.
4) I use 20# Dacron for tying my own slip bobber knots... but also pack the quick knots and keep in my slip bobber box. i trim the leading tag of the bright green dacron knot to slip through the guides easier on the cast and leave the trailing tag longer to serve as a visible indicator.
5)My first choice is a thill slip bobber in the two smaller sizes.
6) i use split shot in various sizes and wrap my line once around the jaws of the shot to provide a tighter adjusting slip. i also adjust the shot distance from the hook at just less than the length of the bobber to prevent wrap ups on the cast.
7) i like the eagle claw brand of hooks as preferred... have used these since i was a kid. i also think i have more consistent hook ups than using a jig tipped with bait... but also like south bend and mustad circle hooks especialy for the kids.

Jim ... i do something similar to your drop shotting technique... i will add the maximum shot to the rig without sinking the bobber and slid the shot close to the hook. i will dip the weed pockets with the rig or pitch into the weed pockets. still havnt found found any monsters close to what you got going though.

Jim i think you should detail that successful drop shot rig setup you got going.

Very nice set up, and well thought out.

I'd post my gear, but the sight of a dis-arranged 5-gal bucket with worm goop and fish scales would embarrass me terribly. I need to maintain that sloppy, red-neck image I worked so hard to achieve!
