Not sure why us Okies feel like we need to rename fish.

Just like the Green Sunfish, we always called them Black Pearch.

I wonder how these would survive in a pond?

Greg, Up north that is a longeared sunfish, Here in
Oklahoma that there is a PUMPKINSEED!!!!!!
And they are beautiful Fish!!!!!!

No red spot on the ear flap, and that flap is way too long to be a pumpkinseed's. Definitely a Longear.
