Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Many of my Crappie honey holes were full of these small Striped Bass....Fun to catch but they must be 18 inches to keep...Caught 13 between 12 and 16 inches this morning on telescopic poles with shiners.....Great time!

I remember the first striper I ever caught. It was on Lake Murray, SC. We had gone for a day picnic with friends and I was standing knee deep in murky brown water. I was casting a 3" shad mimic crankbait, my rig was an old El Cheapo Zebco 202 combo from Kmart. I was also a bit inebriated, after too many beers.

When the striper hit I was taken off guard. It was a savage strike and I almost fell over. The fight was strong, and the fish never breached - I had no idea what it was. The gear held together, luckily, and I finally got the fish within arms reach. All our fiends were behind me on the bank shouting, "Woo-hoo!" I was reeling... in more ways than one.

At last the fish came up and I saw what it was. "Striper!" I blurted out and reached down to lip it out. At that point, I guess the beast had seen enough of me. It spit the lure back in my face, showed me its tail and disappeared back into the water. I stood there, teetering, with a limp line and only the memory. At least I had witnesses.

Had that fish been caught on a telescoping pole, well.... I dont know how things would have gone. Great job, Jeff!

It was fantastic Jim....I kept telling myself it's 12/31/2011 and it's 61 degrees....I'm catching fish so I'm going to enjoy it! These little stripers are strong fighters and fun to catch!

Hey...it's winter, and we are still catching fish!

Whooo-hoooo! Who cares?

Yes John, reality is I probably wouldn't have been able to land a keeper since I was set up for Crappie.......I had to lock these poles in the boat because these Stripers hit violently.....I just wanted one 18 inch keeper to filet and stuff with crab meat.....Would have made a great New Year's Eve dinner......
