With water temps above 80 now........the snake activity is really picking up...........I even poked this snake twice and it didn't take off..........

I'd say it's a Brown Watersnake, as the dark brown body patterns have a separation and the head is somewhat small. A Water Moccasin's head is big and blocky and the body pattern doesn't match a Copperhead. Nice shot Jeff!

In Coastal North Carolina the water moccasin and the common brown banded water snake look very similar..........I believe this one to be the later but I couldn't get this one to take off.........if a water snake the entire body would be submerged while swimming but in the case of a cottonmouth the entire snake would be on the surface.........the head looks a bit flatter than that of a moccasin as well..............either way I give them plenty room.........I have seen the water snakes up to 6 pushing 7 feet around the Albemarle...........
