It's a store bought polymer soft plastic. That's why the apology to purists. I have lots of fur and feathers in my box also, but if I had to pick a single item out of the box to fish on the fly rod in a warm fresh water fishing contest, this would be it. Something about the Catalpa pattern; surprisingly large bass take this sometimes, but it mostly catches decent size panfish.
