The fun never ends in NC.
I'm invited to Buggs Island for some big kitty fishing but I'm also going to wait for water temperatures below 50 degrees.....
James River in Virginia deserves it's own comment......The catfishing is amazing on the James for numbers and size.....countless testimonials of fish upwards of 60 to 70 pounds Jim.....Twenty years ago I would have easily said and argued Santee Cooper but living and fishing the Tidewater for 12 years I would definitely put the James River up there for "Kitty Fish"......You're right on with your comment Jim!
Some friends took me out for my birthday last Sunday.......We caught a few gills on deep brush piles 20-30 FOW and we fished the northern boat lanes of Lake Marion and had seven bites while catfishing. We had a 23 as the largest, a 17 pictured here, a 16.5 and a 9 , all blue cats.....I saw several guides weighing in fish over 35 the same afternoon with more numbers......They still catch alot of big Blue Cats and Flatheads on Santee Cooper....The record for Blue Ctafish is 109 pounds on 20 lb. line and the Channel Catfish record is 58 pounds. They aggressively stocked these fish for years and these lakes have been around since 1939.....Lots of great catfishing on Santee Cooper in South Carolina..They do great down there when the water gets below 50 degrees....
Nice cats, Jeffrey! What is the top-end for blue cats in Santee Country? I heard that most of the fish are 5 to 10 pounds with high teen and low twenty fish fairly common. Were these your biggest ones of the trip? In James River country, nobody gets too excited unless cats top the 50 pound mark.
Was this a charter on a pontoon boat? Lots of action?
