You know Dick,when the bite is on with these longears ,it is on as soon as your bait hits the water....plenty of action and possible to catch 30 in a few hrs.

Nice fish Mike any fish that will stretch your line is a goodun. We don't have any longears around here that I'm aware of and I've caught many many fishes but no longears.

Thank's to everyone who commented about whether or not this was a redbreast,i catch these in the san antonio river and one it's tributaries the cibilo creek,never caught one of these larger than 7"

Looks like a longear to me. They're a different species than redbreasts.

Aside from that opercle flap, they do look a lot alike.

The red breast here is SC, interestingly enough, don't always have that same vivid coloration. They tend to be a bit faded, in my experience. Almost exclusively they are fish of the rivers and the most brightly colored ones come from nearer the coast. The slow, black waters of the Edisto Drain Basin produce some really nice ones.

I've caught them way up river in the midstate, the headwater reaches of the Edisto system. They weren't nearly vibrant...

Funny thing. When they are biting, don't bother to get on the water after 10am. It is like a switch is turned off then, and they just quit. I always got to the river just before daybreak.

 Yep thats a Redbreast Sunfish. I've heard them called Redbellies, River bream, Longears, Redbreast bream and of course just plain old Bream but the charactoristic that is easily identifyable is them Big ol Ears. The ears are usually black and an inch or longer. Their a hard fighting fish and a Ton of Fun on a light flyrod :)
