Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hey I caught this fish before! Check the photo from 5/20? I'm holding it from the other side but you can still line up the marks on the tail. And the small cut out part on the tail has healed in this picture. The fish also looks more healthy. Last time it had just finished spawning. The fish hit a top-water Pop-R this time!

"The tipping point to start the top-water action seems to be around 75 and up?  We have had the warmest three days of year in my area, this I believe turned those bass on to Top-Water! Also make sure your matching the hatch with your lure color.  A white bottom with a dark color top works in my local waters.  And it is very important look for low wind days at low light times.  A 3-5mph wind day between 5am-8am or between 6pm until dark is what I look for!!"

Thanks for that great summary, Andre! No wonder you are a fish catching machine.

Id say we're there, as far as the conditions are concerned. Water temp has got to be close here in SC. Time of day and wind is also right on - I get out early. My topwaters are either bluegill or frog mimics, both of which are prevalent. And I've caught small bass on other things, so I know the fish are there.

My guess is that Im facing water that may yet be a tad cool and the "5% Factor." Predators account for only 5%, + or -, of the total fish numbers in a body of water. From the bank where I fish, they are either in the vicinity or they aren't. I can't chase them down. They'll come to my hook, in time. Until then I focus on the greater numbers found among the panfish.
