Nice RE Jeff

Marisa

Right now the water temp is ~65* F and will start climbing. The water at the end of the dock is ~24’. The big BG and RE will be in 17’ to 9’ right about now. Crappie are coming off the spawn and are starting to build up under the end of the docks looking for shad.

I would fish marabou jigs (of course), 1” curly tails, or up to 1 ½” tubes. Try using the countdown method, casting away from the docks or perpendicular to the docks. Counting down will help you locate suspended fish.

When the sun gets high – fish closer to the docks – under if you can. Drifting crickets (no weight) under the docks is a lot of fun – you catch a lot of smaller fish but you will get some bruisers as well.

On the marabou or hair jigs you can pin a cricket or mealworm on it. Red worms and real small Crawlers work well also. A neat bait for the docks at Perris is a small tube jig with a #10 or #12 hook threaded into a jumbo mealworm. It’s a good bait when the bite is tuff.

2lb test is a big plus.

You can try casting small spoons and spinners but watch out for the cables.

If you are going to fish the docks a lot - a portable depth finder is a real good investment.

Check out JigCraft.com for proven jig patterns for the really big BG & RE at Lake Perris.

Ha Ha Jim!  Marisa...  Here's my "secret" method.  Don't tell anyone.. Use 2 or 4 lb test line,  a # 8 circle hook tied on a double overhand knot loop, and leave about 24 inches of loose line below the hook.  Clamp on a size 7 split shot about 6 inches from the end of the line.  This is basically a "drop shot" rig but I use a loose loop of line to my hook instead of tying the hook directly to the line, and a split shot that will slide off the line if it gets snagged in some rocks.  Also with the weight being on the bottom, you won't get any moss on your hook, just on the sinker.  Plus the bait is suspended up off the bottom making it easier for the fish to see.  I like crickets the best, but waxworms, redworms and mealworms work pretty good too.  Cast out, let it sink to the bottom and slowly wind it back in.  Pay attention for any little tugs.  Try this Marisa at Lake Perris.  It really does work very well.

One tip, Marisa, is to wait until the older, cool lookin' guys with the gray goatees and crickets and jigs come down to the docks and then just hang around them and beg for info.

I am sure they will give you plenty of info!

Lake Casitas!  I grew up bass fishing at that lake.  It almost looks like I'm at Casitas in the photo...
