Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I got this one today on a whim. I haven't used a trigger spin in a long time so for $13.00, I said, "Why not?"
Took it to the river this afternoon and Bam! I loved it. I had forgotten how nice fishing with these these things is.
Nice smooth drag, too.
I put it on a soft action, 6 foot rod that works well with it. Sweet!
I may just convert over all my spincast reels to triggers!

Yea I know that you definitely don't want any rod overhanging or they'll be in pieces for sure.

There is always that concern with spincasters, Dave. Its one of their minor shortcomings. The line pick-up pin is small and the gap between the nose cone and the rotating spool cover is crucial. If the line is too large in diameter, it will hang up in the gap and cause problems. If its too thin, the pin will miss it altogether. The rotating spool cover must also be flawlessly smooth, or it snatches at the line and nicks it up.

The line type is also important. It cannot be too limp, nor too stiff. The finest braid, for example, may cause problems with this reel. In this case, the reel came packaged with with 4 lb. Stren, so I just let it on there. I normally use 4 lb Omniflex** for almost everything mono, so it should be a good choice when re-spool in the future.

** An unheralded monofilament most people bypass while reaching for the "good stuff."

I did not like the triggerspin reels, because you had to keep the line tight for it to reel in.  It would work with vertical jigging, but it did not work very well for me with horizonal jigging.   So I went back to a spinning outfit.  But if it works for you then you should use it. and at 13.00 bucks then use it.

Wow Dick, 11 FEET? Holy cow!

Im planning on using these for my kayak, so I cant ge too long. I fish the black water Edisto, and it is overhung in the extreme with branches. I lost two floats today in the stuff. A shorter rod is better, when working under the canopy.

I have 2 pflueger underspins on a couple 11' wimpy rods. They seem to work ok for what I got them for and catching fish is fun they have so much bend in them.
