Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Low water and shallow ? Very slow retrieve with pauses creating wake similar to a Jitterbug . The rod held high after long cast to keep the lure on top or just under surface lowering rod tip gradually as it approaches you. Keep the lure and line straight to your rod tip and reel without slack for hook setting control.
Far Right :Rapala J-11 4,1/4" Floater, Storm with Rattle ,3,3/4" jointed Plug; Left Column: J-9 ,3,1/4"Rapala floaters. All Rapalas old FINLAND models.

Allen,  I am like you, and have a tackle box just full of old Rapalas that I use on my many trips to Sask. during the early 60's.  I thought they were high priced in them days when I would buy them for $1.29, but sure would hate to have to replace them at todays prices!!  All sizes and colors, but one of my favoirte was a jointed orange one.  That sure brought a lot of walleys into my boat over the years.  Have even use some of the smaller ones for chasing the blue gills, and have had some decent results with them.  Great lures and that old tackle box has a lot of memories and Rapalas in it!!

Old Lauri Rapala was really onto something ,hey men?

I second with Allen.

These segmented lures have proven themselves to work very well, especially in Japan as well. I believe we have an east coast person, using the Japanese lure called Train Buddy, and landed quite a few fishes with it.

I don't want to think about how many Rapala's I have in my tackle boxes.  Especially if I have to replace them all!  $$$$$!!!  That said, they are worth the money.

Personally, I'm rather fond of fishing the X-Rap and Clackin-Rap.  They work very good for my trolling technique, at least down in Oklahoma, and before all the weeds come in here in MI.

That said, I have an original floating Rapala, F5 (I think, maybe an F7) that will always have a home in my box, unless I loose it.  It would be quickly replaced.  I also have a J7 jointed version, a floater in that bright orange color, and a Scatter Rap.  That Scatter Rap is interesting.  I'll have to try it again soon.

KELLY;; I JUST TYPED IN; JOINTED RAPALA LURES;; YES SIR; THEY STILL MAKE THEM AND IN SEVERAL SIZES TO !

Comment by Kelly Peterson on July 17, 2016 at 7:31pm
Can one still buy jointed Rapala? And in smaller sizes?

Back in the day one of my best lures for trout was a small jointed MirrOLure. Never tried it on gills since I almost exclusively fished for trout in my younger years. Wish I still had that lure as I'm sure it would work on bluegill. It was white belly, silvery back with red head and throat patch.
