Edward Ringwood Hewitt used this as a favorite. His method was to land it and then carefully pull it so it would skim across the surface of the water. This was fished for trout in streams, but like many other trout flies the Bluegill also like these.
For those few hours early and late when the wind falls off and insects start dapping the surface of the water, switch to these skimmers.

When insects get out and start dapping the surface if the water, I switch to these skimmers.
