Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

These reels are about as simple as it gets.
All metal, interchangeable spools, and clicker drag.
I have a total of 8$ in this reel, and it'll probably last longer than I will. I have several of these.
If you're after striper or salmon, you oughta have a disc drag reel.
For bluegill and bass, this is flawless.

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH DAVID;  TO ME A FLY REEL IS JUST SOMETHING TO HOLD LINE; NOT MUCH MORE THAN THAT.  WHEN I DO HOOK ONE;; I STRIP IT IN  BY HAND  DONT USE THE REEL...  AUTOMATIC REELS ARE GREAT-  PROVIDED YOU GET A GOOD ONE!  A LOT ON THE MARKET TODAY ARE TO BIG AND HEAVY. MY PERRINE REEL ARE HALF THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF ANY I HAVE SEEN MADE TODAY  AND WORK 10 TIMES BETTER!!!!

I would love having a $200 reel.
Or even a $50 version.

But my fishing is casual, for relatively small fish. A 3 or 4 pound fish is a monster to me.
With money taken out of the equation, the reel under these conditions is just a convenient line storage device. Should I tangle with a large bass - the likeliest "spoiler" in my locale - I'm good up to about ten pounds. That's where this sort of reel starts to suffer for lack of a friction drag system.
Honestly, I've never caught a bass anywhere near that big while beating the bushes with a fly rod.

Besides, I've never really had anything NICE like a $200 fly reel. I wouldn't know how to act with one. I'd probably leave it home for fear of breaking it... And use this one in its place!

I firmly believe that if it makes you happy, you will enjoy greater success on the water. No matter if it cost $5 or $50

Well Leo, I can afford better, but I keep asking, "Why?"
It's not needed and that's money I could spend on a new vise.
Mate this reel to my preferred 5/6 wt rod, and you'll have money left over from a fifty. The bluegill and bass never seem the wiser, either.

Classic. If it works, it works. If you can catch a fish with a $1 reel, or even a can pull of lines, it's merely because of your experience, skills, and a bit of luck. Those who have the cash to shell out for the high end stuff, if they only catch skunks, well, it tells you something..

Well, Ken, I use them.
I don't have any fancy, CNC machined reels.
No drag-equipped models, no clock spring autos.
These are my go to, basically, these Shakepeare SAs. I like the more expensive, fancy reels. I wouldnt object to owning some.
But for the casual fly fishing I do, these do the job
(I do have a couple "tuna can" Martins banging around, but they aren't as good as these.)

As for collectibity, there is none. They come in two variations:

Mod 1094 - black
Mod 1096 - silver

That's it. As far as I know, they were included with beginner combo rigs a decade or two ago. Today nobody wants them, when there are Sages and Redingtons and $am$ons filling every catalog. They are considered entry level, fit only for nimrods and "hat catchers" - which pretty much describes me!

They always work, there is nothing to hang up or fail. I like that.
I was watching a video yesterday, from a champion tyer and fly angler in Ireland.
Guess what kinda reel he had? One just like this.
