I agree that hybrids have a lot of upside. And in my case, it's perhaps ironic that I didn't stock these, and they weren't even stocked into this pond - they were stocked into the four-acre pond fifty yards down the hill from this one, and evidently swam up a two-foot drop fat the base of the drain of the upper pond.
I consider HBG to be somewhat of an underdog.....when they first made an appearance (commercially) all those years ago, they were lauded as the answer to the native BG's shortcomings. Lots of folks bought into the hype, and as the years passed, many disgruntled pondowners found out the hard way that this fish had shortcomings.....some of which were serious enough to render it a totally unsuitable candidate for many ponds. I think some of this was due to misrepresentation on the part of some hatcheries, but mostly I think it was because of a general lack of knowledge about pond management, proper species balance, and certainly a misunderstanding of the conditions HBG need to prosper, and reach their full potential.
Nowadays, I see a renewed interest in this fish, which, along with a greatly enhanced understanding of what role it can play in a particular BOW, means that we may begin to see just what this fish is capable of. And efforts like what you're achieving will go a long way toward proving that out, Walt.
Just an outstanding fish....
Nice Walt....I never get tired of the tanker Hybrids!
I had a feeling you would appreciate this fish, Tony! You are the champion of the hybrids, for sure. If I didn't live in the range of the coppernose, I would have to think long and hard about focusing on hybrid bluegill.
A 2 lb. HBG........gotta' love that!!
32 oz. on the nose. I agree that it looks like a female.
Outstanding! Did you get a weight? Looks a lot like a female.
