Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have NEVER caught a catfish in this lake before! Tonight, they were all that was biting. The bream have moved into the shallows across the lake, and the bass have followed them. I guess the catfish were evicted from the weedy edge of the lake by territorial bream? They sure piled up on my side of the lake! All were caught on bread, using my ultralight bream poles.

Those are Yellow Bullheads. You can tell by the white whiskers below their mouth, and the long anal fin. Black Bullheads have black, brown, or grey whiskers below their mouth, and are much broader in the shoulders, with a smaller anal fin. I don't think Florida has many Black Bullheads? Mainly the Yellow, Brown, and the smaller Snail, Flat, & Lil Suwanee Spotted Bullhead.  Those are beaut's. I bet that was a lot of fun! I'm a little jealous. Good eating too!

WHOOHOO! The big one on the end is the new Florida record for black bullhead! 2 lb 6.1 oz! The record is vacant, and the qualifying weight is 2 lbs... I'm 99% sure I have them identified correctly... smooth, unbarbed dorsal spine, grey base on anal fin, lighter band at tail base in some individuals... SWEET! And THAT fish was the first catfish I've EVER caught in this lake!
