Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Jersey Rigg 4" worm right up on shore.
Either a Motoroil or Gold Ice color.
Personal best. I'm guessing 4lbs.Awesomely strong fat 25 " Pik!!!

Drove to ponds in the carriage path backhills of Ringwood in my truck while listening to WKCR 's transmission of live recordings of the Oscar Pederson Trio.

Thanks MC and good to hear from you again!

The shallow weed die off in Fall drives them deeper for sure up here in New Jersey .

Been awhile since I've been on here :). Down here in FL I've noticed they stay pretty much with the weeds or lily pads if there are any in the lake. They tend to stay pretty shallow all year long except for the coldest days of the year, then I notice that they do move into deeper weed beds. They are very much an ambush predator, so anykind of cover that can be used for that purpose has a good chance of holding Piks. Awesome fish by the way!!!

I am rethinking what I said last post .They relate to weeds in a big way so am not sure that DEEP is MOSTLY  the way to go .Of course I dont rule it out because of the deep water sluggo fish I caught Chris.

What I'm now thinking is the Pickerel will most ften utilize shallow weeds or deeper weed edges  in the season they are providing the food source and ambush point needed .  Late season die offs or young waters without mature weed growth that do contain Pickerel however I feel the Deeper they will be found. Not sure this is totally well thought out but it's giving me a bit of a ringing truth to it.

Yes but they are adaptable in NJersey...My biggest actually came in a shallow pond at the end of Summer .I do agree though that most situations they are a cold deeper water fish and hit the shallows early and late cold water periods.

Oh and I once caught a 24" 3 and 3/4 # Pickerel at dusk in mid summer 22' feet on bottom using a Sluggo.

Chris nice Pik!!
My biggest numbers of Pickerel 20" and over come in April on spoons and Crankbaits,Summer; in small ponds using Johnson Spoons ,Rubber worms, and 3"Wild Eye Shad swimbaits, Fall; Trolling Crankbaits over deep water (20-25')and flutter spoons over weeds.Thru the ice live shiner on a tipup.
