what would you call a one of those japanese rods with an adjustable line , a fly rod ,  and with the most sensitive strike indicator in the world, a porcupine quill , and a big fat juciey cricket, and a 40 foot range,? Answer :   Fish in the boat.   LOFR

The fly rod - that's the ticket.

You Go Carl, I have been using porcupine quills for 50 years with a fly rod , it is the closest thing I know  short of a net to fill the boat up with fish, keep up the good work . Oh yea I use live crickets under the quills  and I cast them 40 ft.  LOFR

For all that, I just switch to my half size lite bite floats. Basically just cut down quills, they'll cast 30 ft or so. That's plenty for what such floats need to do.
On the negative side, they lack the "quill float cool factor."

they take a little to get use to David.  practicing roll casting helps a lot;;  and  also depends on the weight of the fly;;  wind;;  and if you should have a sinker on the line.  I also found out;; depending on your fly line;; and type of fly rod;; as well as length of your fly rod.;;  makes a big difference,,  all said ;; it takes practice!!

Very fun to use. I don't care for them if casting any distance, but long poling it near the boat, they are awesome.

thanks Steve;; thank you to Leo !!  quill floats are fun to use;;  watch them run for a bit; then shoot down like a torpedo!!
