Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

These are my goto Bluegill flies. The middle left is a soft hackle and I use various colors, orange, yellow, green and sometimes natural colors of browns and greens. The popper is a new design for me. I have always used cork in stead of craft foam.

I found it as a carp fly too. I just happened to take it to the creek to see how it fished and I started hooking up with rock bass and other sunfish. The I caught a couple of smallmouth. It didn't take long to make it a keeper in my fly box. I believe they take if for a small crawdad and/or nymph of some sort. It does tend to catch bigger sunfish than my other offerings........I also carry a cell phone for emergencies. Heat stroke, heart attack, or just a fall while wading in the creek. I keep it in a baggie to keep it dry so it is not very handy. I should take a few pics of the creek though. It is a pretty creek and the water is quite clear except after a big rain. I like it because it is 3 min. from the house. Another one is about 2 min. from the house and another nice little creek is about 20 min..There are also several small state owned lakes within an hours drive which is why I bought a yak. I still prefer to wade the creeks.

Well Ray most of us have become (very) amateur fotogs.
With the proliferation of cellphones and digicams, it's almost hard to NOT have something with you to capture images of your fishing.
I'd sure appreciate it if we got see a few pics of you at your fishing _- even a pic or two of your dog or favorite spot at the creek would be nice.

PS I looked up the Blind Squirrel... Which is a carp fly! But it looks interesting.

I seldom take any pics of my catches. I am a C&R guy. I will take a pic if I need an ID or it is something special for me. I mostly fish a couple of small creeks near home and most of the fish are also small. Not like some of the monsters I see on here. I have caught a couple of smallmouth that approach 3# but most are 8 to 13" and only a few gills bigger than your hand. Some of the rock bass are bigger but I never target them. There is also some kind of small chub that I sometimes catch. I never hook any drum, catfish, suckers or carp so I believe they are not there or so few that they just never show up.

I've heard of the Blind Squirrel; I'll have to look it up.
Thanks Ditz!

The upper left fly is basicly a wooly worm. it has a red calf tail tail. Tan chenille body over wrapped with a grizzly hackle and a bead chain eye. It is on a curved shank hook. The top right is the most difficult tie. It is a 'blind squirrel' and on a #10 hook which is my go to hook size for gills. My main flies have been chosen over a lot of years. The blind squirrel is a new addition that I learned about just a couple of years ago.

Great fly collection for the jobs. Show the results on these from the catches for your water. Would love to document them.

WEll, a revival on this one.

I started fly fishing in earnest about a month after this last post. I used nothing else the remainder of last season and have only picked up one spinning rig since.

I also started tying my own flies in the interim. Of the flies you have there Ive tied most. My fave of th elot is the popping beetle.
