Good sized chain pickerel caught on #3, Luhr-Jensen 'Krocodile' casting spoon. This fish was as long as my forearm, which is big in my experience. For those who don't know, the chain pickerel (esox niger), or 'jackfish', is the Southern cousin of the pike and muskellunge. They are far smaller than these two, however. Before this one, I cant recall ever catching any jackfish over a foot long.
The colder temperatures have brought them out of hiding and into the shallows to feed. Small baitfish and schooling shad are their prey, and the 'Krocodile' mimics the latter quite well. Theoretically, they should be feeding all winter. I hope so.
