Nice chunky gill, Richard! I am a big fan of yellow and orange for gills as well, with black being another of my favorite colors.

Great seeing fish on fly. Water looks so calm and inviting.

yes the driftless area and the pink squirrel are a great combo.  I fish out there a whole bunch for trout.

Pink, orange, yellow also seem to be attractive to bluegill.

Also, scuds and other crustaceans get a parasitic amoeba in the innards that creates an orange-yellow spot, visible from without. This is sometimes referred to as an "egg spot,' as some assume this is what the spot is.Trout are known to select these scuds over others when they are on the waters. I'm guessing this color contrast "spot" is not unknown among these critters wherever they swim and bluegill are at least accustomed to seeing something like it.

are you referring to the driftless area richard?

Comment by Richard Allen Rupp on December 9, 2013 at 7:33pm

that will work well, the chenille is not as tough as a dubbed thorax... plus, it's the contrast in color and the 'bugginess' that I think attract the fish.  It is a go to trout fly in MN, IA, and WI.

I've tried tying a few of those Pink Squirrels tonight. I used a grey woolen roving/green polyester dubbing mix, wrapped with wire. This has proven to be pretty tough in the past. For the thorax, I dubbed spun pink marabou onto thread and wrapped it on tight. It should all hold up pretty well.

Ive been messing around with this sort of nymph fly lately. Im glad to know they are fish catchers. Thanks, Richard and Joe.

Yes I have,i put a lot of business through it as well.  The shop is run by a very nice couple, Mat and his wife Geri.  She is an outstanding fly fisher as well.

They are very proud of the fact that the obtain this fly from the originator of the fly himself (Ron Bethke), however, I think they are lacking in durability.  To make the fly more durable I add a flashback of either gold tinsel or gold flashabou.  This keeps the chenille color from falling forward over the bead.

Hope this helps some.
