Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

These were caught off of the nest in May and are all 9-10inch males. Notice the bright red tabs and how much color they have to their bodies.

Thanks Vic I have heard the name before never knew what it was. I just call them gils and sunfish. They all taste the same to me. :)

Nice catch, Troy.

Is that a male BG I see, on the left side of the pic?

Down here in Dixie we refer to redear sunfish (Lepomis Microlophus) as Shellcrackers, due to there hard boned area in the back of their throats which allows them to crack open the ectosheletons of small mullusks and snails thus the nickname shellcracker, but this is not strictly a southern term, but we like it. It's kind like the nicknames such as Pumpkinseed or stumpknocker.   LOL  It's just fishing lingo
