They can breathe air, and they fight hard! In MS guys fish stagnant backwaters with bass gear to tangle with a grinnell. They're like a gar, but with some class! And word to those who care: they'll eat every bream in a pond... prolific breeders those grinnell...

We might add that they are supremely evolved predators; 100 million years of unchanged development. Very aggressive and stealthy, only in recent times have people begun to appreciate them,

Actually the bowfin caviar is a distinct product. It is available on-line in several different iterations, which surprised me. It seems like a bit of a joke perhaps; you know how anything with the word "cajun" in front of it tends to gets a smile from people. But the 'Chopuique Royale' roe is apparently highly prized and commands some serious prices.

Who would have ever thought such thing, from the lowly dogfish?

yeah they make caviar out of the roe and call it cajun caviar lol

Another picture of this Bowfin, I was raised calling them dogfish. Usually they are just plain colored none of the markings like this one, I wonder if its near death experience brought out its true colors.

Looks like a bowfin to me. See the little nose barbells? 'Pretty sure that's a giveaway. The mottling on the sides is cool.

Grinnell is another name, common in the South and Midwest. Their roe is prized in LA.

The first thing that crossed my mind was "Snakehead!" My (Vietnamese) wife says it looks like one, too. Did you catch it in a body of water known to have snakeheads?

Bowfin? Like a "Grinell"? Lung fish? I don't know... yeah, maybe, but it doesn't quite look right. It DOES look like a good live bait though! But not knowing what it is means the right thing is to put it back... native fish are taking a beating. Good save Eric. Cheers!

I saw a few people fishing along shore, I stopped asked some questions and I kept hearing something in the bushes, one guy laughs yeah I caught a snakehead and tossed it on shore a couple hours ago. I looked at it and I knew it wasn't a snakehead, I grabbed a bucket of water got this native non snakehead fish back to life tossed him back in the water.

Otherwise known as a "bowfin." Cute little sucker, aint it?

Watch them fingers, though!

PS Jacob, I've read that the 'choupique' is a different fish native to the bayous. The name, though, has crossed over to include the bowfin.
