No makes perfect sense to me, but I sort of got confused when I was reading your post. That would match up with the conditions here, Lots of exposure to light and very little coverage or structure..

that been my finding. I started my pond water muddy fish fish had no color. As my water cleared up my fish took on color. Just something to look at. Others may weigh in on this.

so Rick are you saying that in clearer water they tend to darken?

A lot of the coloration on fishes will be due to the water clarity. Just like us in the sun we turn to darken up.

Dirty water won’t let the light in and the fish seems to be lighter. Also they’ll pickup mud from real muddy ponds and lakes.

Put them in clean water and they’ll lighten up.  Now remember this is just an old man from Texas 2 cents

Alright! At least someone is catching something.

But put that danged cigarette down - you're gonna give them bad habits!

David, yeah, I have noticed quite a few fish in this particular body of water that have that coloring..I suppose they have adapted their hues for their environment..I'll se if I can find another example..Cheers!

Judging by the sweat on your brow, he must have put up a helluva fight! LOL

Little 'darkie', isn't he?
