Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I'm celebrating Christmas early this year with slab crappies and bull bluegills. BFOD here went 14.5 inches...another catch and release qualifier for PA waters.

Excellent, you've got into some really nice crappie this fall.

wow Jim !!  super size slab !!  congrats on a certification qualifier !

Exactly...I am not targeting the crappie, rather, keying on the more consistent bluegill bite. My buddy Gary gave a go with larger tube and minnow baits today and lost a huge gill.

Thanks for sharing Jim......good luck when you get back on them.........I lose several nice crappie every winter on small baits.......just comes with the territory...........

Yes...these took 1/80th oz orange jigheads with a waxie tipper.

It seems when I target these guys with larger profile jigs/baits, I never run into them.  Seem to be getting the incidental catches while scaling down for the gills. Lost another big crappie, too, while catching 31 gill and P-gills.
