Yeah many folks disrespect various fish species and Bowfin get a bad rap.......Everywhere I catch big bluegill in the Carolinas.......they share residence with native Bowfin......They create a balance and I'm a true believer that they are important to my bluegill success on the Albemarle Sound........They are fun to catch but punish light gear.....even using 12 pound test many of these fish break me off after a violent event known as hook set....

These fish are BRUTAL on the end of a line! Unfortunately most people hate Bowfins. When I was in Georgia I saw a Bowfin that someone had just left on the bank to die. Also, a day or two later a little girl caught a small one and the guy that she was with told her "you don't eat them" and then he told her to throw it on the ground until it was dead. So, she held the fish up high and commenced to body slamming the Bowfin to the ground. I was a little dismayed after I witnessed that incident.

Interesting looking fish Ben , don't know if I"ve ever seen one in person or not . I"d probably remember it if I had.....
