I use to get many hours of enjoyment carving birds and ducks. Started out with a couple just goofing off then got into it more serious. I like fly tying is a great stress reliever but found I can't do both. I was working on a crappie which is in my photo's and really need to finish it. I'm stopped on the scales i'll need help on them to get the crappie finished. If you done clay your probably a natural except if you take to much off with clay you can always add some more clay. Wood is a different animal so the mistakes have to be very minimal. Try it you'll like it.

Thanks Rick for the quick comeback. Woodcarving is such a stress reliever and an art itself.

These scale were burned in with a scale tip on a wood burning tool.  Another way to make scales is with a small rotary tip(1/8 inch diamond or ruby and make cross hatching along the sides of the fish.

Wow a fellow wood carver that's great. If I may ask how did you do your scales. I started a crappie many years ago but put it aside cause of the scales. I started posting it as I made progress but my progress was halted because of the scale process. I originally carved birds so the fish was a different undertaking. Oh and by the way great paint job to.
