Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Two Carolina Traditions.....Big Fliers and Bojangles Famous Chicken and Biscuits....9/1/2013

During heavy rain runoffs our local creeks and rivers suffer periods of low oxygen and the bite slows for most species.....but not Flier Sunfish....they are very tolerant of these conditions and flourish while other species wait for the Oxygen levels to return to normal....

What a chunk of a flier, congrats. I went to one Bojangles when I was in SC on a trip with the baseball team when I was in high school. Too bad they aren't up here.

Fliers closest to established state and world records are more often caught in MAY prespawn but we often locate some trophy fliers in early Fall around the Albemarle like this one caught the first day of September last year....Looking forward to this bite again this fall.............

We also catch some good Fliers in extreme coastal Virginia Ben......mainly tidal waters but Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp is full of them......the ones pictured below were caught in Virginia waters......

I too catch them in various colors Ben depending on location.....they get very dark in the local tannic waters but a couple canals I fish also produce a more silver shade like the ones below....

I like Fliers! Here is a dark aqua-silver colored one I caught in Georgia
