Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

the only fish I seem to catch in this cold weather are these critters... 1/16 oz jig with 1" chartreuse gulp minnow.

Thanks Ken.....I primarily catch Coppernose which are very cold water intolerant......rarely see one once surface temperatures dip below 50.....we do however have some scattered Northerns throughout this region so you can find a bite in cold water.....I caught a few earlier this year with water temps as low as 38 degrees......creek channels are normally 10 feet or shallower ....we're very close to sea level in this region and deep water is far and in between miles and miles of 12 feet or less.......but we are blessed with above average white and yellow perch fishing as well so I fish year round, just not very productive December through February for the Coppernose that dominate our waters.....thanks for the questions.....hope this helps....

Jeff is there a temperature range in your locale where you encounter BG lockjaw? how deep are the creek channels in your area?

thanks David, Mic... they are undoubtedly my favorite game fish. freshwater bonefish lol... especially when i hook up in this area with my ultra lights... the swim is all fine gravel and sand with the original creek channel running adjacent to the bank... some very memorable blistering runs.

Our weather has remained a little warmer than normal so water temps are holding in the 60s....going to chase Gills and maybe a Crappie in creek channels....it'll start dropping off real soon but I'm hoping to extend the good bite another weekend....time change kills my weekday fishing....commute 125 miles a day so this time of year there ain't much daylight left....lol

thanks John ... i have these two reservoirs just a couple miles from the house i just moved into a couple years ago filled with good sized smallmouth. smallest bass i catch is 15- 16" ...i usually avg 17-18" and caught a few over 20 and one at 22  i feel truly blessed. i really feel the above avg size in this reservoir for these guys is no one fishes for them. everyone targets bluegill and crappie and the locals keep everything they catch. also there is a huge population of shiners that keeps all the fish fat.
