Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is by far the largest White Perch I've every caught. My back of my hand is resting on the ground and the Leatherman Tool is 9" long.

They are generally considered invasive wherever they appear in freshwater.
Here in SC, they removed all creel limits on them 6 years ago... catch all you want, all the time.
They are aggressively prolific and will overwhelm food sources before long. White bass and crappie are usually the first fisheries to feel their impact.

When you can find them, they offer almost limitless catching ability.
They move around ALOT, however, so getting them consistently is the challenge.

White Perch are invasive here.  I've caught two, and both were turned into Catfish bait.  Sooner Lake, about 1 1/2 hours away from me, is over-populated with the things.

Here's another shot of the same fish.  He's quite a bit darker on top that what I'm used to seeing on a White Perch.

They are the smallest of the subgroup and they just don't get huge, like some of their kin.
For those who don't know, they are in the same family of fishes as stripers and white bass.
A record Whitey would be in the four pound class.
A likely place to find one that size would be in a warm water estuarine system...
like the region surrounding NC's Pamlico Sound.

I like the "ninja" coloration these larger ones get.

I thought it was a 'thin' largemouth until I tried to lip grip it and saw the mouth. :-)
