When I lived in CO, I used to fish emergers instead of topwaters during hatches. That is a different situation than the terrestrials for sunfish and bass, I guess, but it was pretty successful. The point was that even when they are taking stuff on the surface, most of the feeding is still happening below. Still, it's a lot more exciting to have a blow up. :)

I also really like to tie and fish GFA Foam Hoppers.  Tied on a size 14 TMC 200R (or equivalent), they make a DEADLY bait for sunnies.

Look into the Gurgle-Pop.  Does everything a Pop-R lure does.  Gurgles, chugs, spits, pops, etc.  Deadly on LMBs in bigger sizes, as well as 'gills and other sunnies in the smaller sizes.

I have some craft foam. IMO, top water is mostly about not having a bad silhouette and being roughly the right size. I have made some of the craft foam flies that are nothing but a cut out shape with the hook threaded through it so the point hangs down. They catch fish. Shape is close to what they want, they look, you twitch- BANG!

Andy, you should look into craft foam for flies on top.  Very cheap, quick, easy, and I've caught A BUNCH of fish on various patterns using craft foam.

Thanks Ken. My first go to was also a marabou jig, but just a shade different at red and white. Then it was an Abu spinner with a white body that had block spots and a bit of white marabou on the treble. Now I am coming full circle I guess...

Nice work Andy!..i really like marabou on a jig... i first learned how to fish on a small 1/32 oz pink and white marabou crappie jig... caught everything on it... even dog fish. fish believe its a living breathing minnow

Thanks, Jeffrey.

Jim - that's pretty much what I was thinking when I decided to keep that one. Ever OptiMystic (that is my handle on a couple of other boards).

These look fishy to me.......nice work Andy!

I found out a long time ago that fish will hit a scruffy, ugly looking jig often better than a meticulously fashioned one.

Stay OptiMystic, Andy!
