Do you love big bluegill?

Ben, a colored border on the opercular tab just means that a fish is not a pure BG......just WHAT it is, depends on a few other variables.
Ben not a problem I'm confused and always been confuse when it come to mixed breeds of fish.
Well, Ben, thanks.
Im no beginner, but I'm still confused.
Even though this fish is obviously a hybrid, many fish caught with a red area on the gill flap are going to be straight Redears or Pumpkinseeds - not hybrids. The posts here seem to give the impression that ALL sunfish with a red color in its gillflap would be a hybrid. This is sure to confuse any beginner fisherman.
I get what you are saying. Ive caught a few 'gillcrackers, which you identified at the time. So, I dont doubt what you say. I don't really see it in this photo, but hey...I appreciate the lesson. With your help I may get better at it.
Thanks, T-man!
Look at the opercular flap...(eartab)...see that burnt orange spot at the end? A "pure" (if you can call them that) BG will have a flap that is all black....any other color, or border, that is present indicates something else in the mix.
Once I see that, I know it's not a pure BG, and I look for other markers that hopefully pin it down.
Im with you, Dick. I've never been very good at all this "Identify My Fish" jazz.
I see a big ear flap and massive sized member of family Centrachidae.
That's about it.
Looks like a gill or mostly a gill wish I could tell hybrids like you guys do I guess with time.
I think we are looking at a gill cracker here. Watcha y'all think?
