Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Mike Phua of Sun Country Marine in Ontario California was pre-fishing for a bass tournament this weekend on Lake Havasu in Arizona. He landed a redear that is tipping the scale on the boat between 5.7 and 5.9 pounds. The current world record redear (also landed at Lake Havasu in 2011) weighed 5.55 pounds. Right after this fish was caught they were trying to find a certified scale in town to get an official weight. I gotta get out there and do some serious Redear fishing!

An interesting thing to note is that the world record redear seems to be in jeopardy anyday and everyday because of the true monsters that populate Lake Havasu. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that record's broken this spring or summer...the volume of three pound plus redears coming out of that lake is mindboggling. I understand they're present in most lakes on the Colorado River system?

From what I understand, some of these fish are caught fairly shallow, 15 -20 feet deep, where the sun's rays can still reach the mussel beds.  Just dive down, pull up a handful of mussels, crack some open and bait up!  I also heard that this fish was caught on a bass jig.

Looks like there may be more of those monsters coming from Lake Havasu.

Thanks Walt....it's always interesting how some species may benefit from invasive organisms and other may become extinct as a result......nice fact sheet.....

Here's their food source, Jeff:

Quagga mussels have gotten into the lake and achieved a high density, so the shellcracker have a smorgasbord.

That's simply amazing that a redear can even get that big and I can't even imagine the fight one that size would put up?? A six pound redear must be like fighting a ten pound catfish, I don't know. She looks like she's been in very deep water, definitely a winter/washed out look she's sporting...makes you wonder how deep of water she's been in all winter.

Anyone know what the main food sources are in Havasu? Just curious what these fish are growing so big on.....
