Another pike fan, here. In my locale, SC, its generally the chain Pickerel, *esox niger.*
When I'm up at the big lake, Ken, I tote a Predator Search setup too. Pretty much the same tackle, with a spoon or spinner. I may try some of those soft bait mimics.

I like pickerel...like John Sheehan targets in the Jersey waters. They are very active throughout the fall and winter months and I have two lakes not far that have 6 pounders annually.

this is the setup i take along with me when i bluegill fish my favorite spots.i use this to test an area for predators that may effect my fishing performance for bluegill and crappie.

1- 300 class spinning reel 20 to 30 class braid

2- 7' fast action graphite rod

3- swim bait 1/8 to 1/4 oz 3 to 4" swim bait . my favorite brand is berkely ripple shad.

You're finding some great fish Ken !Great job!

Comment by Slip Sinker on October 15, 2013 at 7:22am

thanks John...he was only 25" but hefty. used my reliable test bait an olive ripple shad. this will reliably catch walleye LM and SM bass as well as the pike out of an area.

this lake will grow these guys up to 42" as well as some good sized musky up to 52"
