You make a real good point David. Possible the seed is doing both fending off competition, but eating needs are possibly met as well . Two birds with one stone efficiency . 61 degrees is not too cold to be making nests but defending a nest already made and eggs dropped perhaps not .
I agree David. I might be wrong thinking this fish was guarding a nest but the way it hit and the fact it was a big bait for him makes me think it's a possibility .
61 degrees on the surface at an inlet pipe today Ken. Very slow start for me this year .Small females for the most part ,two 8" males. Put a 3" gill under a float trying to call a Bass to it, no dice. Fished it for about 20 minutes .
Boy he must have been hungry, pretty fish.

Yes Jeffrey , fought real well for its size .I believe a male guarding a nest is the best fight a fish can give!
Nice one John......these are the first species of sunfish to spawn in our region and I caught eleven aggressive seeds today........tough little guys....
