What type of animal is a bluegill?
I have a pond management business based out of middle Tennessee. Presently I manage approximately 500 acres of water, ranging from 1/4 acre ponds to a 120-acre lake. Bluegill to two pounds, shellcracker to well over two pounds, and bass to ten pounds have been caught from ponds I manage. I have a fish-hauling truck and haul fish all over the Southeast. I'm also a distributor for Skretting fish food.
What state are you from? This can help us get together for fishing trips!

Lake Perris bluegill have many different foods to choose from. The lake has ahuge population of shad, there's a continious hatch of larva, clams are plentiful, craw dads and plankton for them to fatten up on. Lake Perris bluegill will grow upto 1 l.b in the first year. It is a very fertile lake

Hi Walt! A pleasure to meet you! 2lb 15.25oz is the mens category, and I'm looking for the WOMANS state record... and having no luck at all. The IFGA site requires a paid membership to view all categories, and we're too broke to do that. I've hit the FL fish and game site, and it's not all inclusive...

As I get ready to develop my farm and pond, would love helpful comment and tips. Deployed at this time and day dreaming everyday about what's to come. It's funny that the (US) fishermen here in Afghanistan all have their favorite fish picture and a story and a picture , the story being ten times the size of the fish. A lot of photo shop in some cases, my fish is real. LOL

Walt, I will be coming home next spring and will be ready to start working on my pond. I took some pictures while I was home of R&R leave for two week. and the local thugs did a number on my place. they tore down all my posted signs, broke up chairs that I had out there and threw some in the pond. I'm sure they are fishing also, but it's nothing I can do. I will post some picture later. But looking for ward to working with you.

Walt, On this picture you can see one of the chairs that was thrown in the pond. I have other pictures I can send you on the pond to let you see what I'm working with let me know. I should be home in April 2012.

Walt - yes I could still use some testers. I will have new 2012 products on the way and also could use more people selling the products as well. Let me know what you are interested in testing - also I have been off the boards - it feels like a billion years. Anyhow I am back. Would be great if you like using these and you can then pass them on to your pond friends/customers - that will get the ball rolling. I was offering test kits I believe. Not many people took me up on it or the World Championships got in the way - or both! But ya - get in touch with me...

Walt, I do agree with you that if they are fishing it helps me with the number of fish in the pond. I have plans to dredge the pond and also enlarge it by an acre. I bought  this place to be a retirement spot for family and friends and thats the reason i put the catfish in. The water was almost orange when I fish purchase the property with pine trees all around the pond. I cut over sixty trees down around the pond and pull about fifteen out of the pond then I limed it bringing to a green clear apperance not algae green. It tends to get muddy when it rains, and from the looks of things standing water it had rain. It gets low late summer and fills up over the winter. I can't put up an electric fence because I have no power on the land.  With retirement coimng up in 2013, I going to kick development into high gear wqhen I get back in the spring. I'm thinking of starting with the pond to get it dug out and dredge to fillup prior to building a house. I have been looking for a company to do the work and see what the cost will be. The bass on the picture was in the pond and we would use live bluegills to catch release it and one day we went out and it was gone. This Bass would take a 6" blue gill off a stringer if you had one out there, so we went to fish baskets a it would come up a attack the basket. We name him DeBoo it would show up when i pull up with my truck. This was prefect when I woulld take a kidd out that had never caught a big fish and I would catch a bluegill set it on a hook at watch the action and the smile we we pulled it out. I think now you have and idea of what I'm trying to do and when I join this site I saw what I want my Bluegills to look like. I know this is a long message, but you guys got me fired up about what my place can become. Iteago

Walt, I know you can't give me and an exact price but what is a ball park figure on an pond enlargement. As when I start talking to these guy I don't want to seem dumb and ready to take anything. I will be at FT Knox KY  next year after my return and managing the project from there. I have a friend that has some big tractor and ground movers, which will help on clearing and will save me some money. But he knows his limits and has not dug a pond. He has 70 acre and what's to dig and pond also, but is not ready yet. I think he's wait to see how my project turns out. He is a retired brick mason and concert man and he knows how to clear land lay slab, drivways and all that stuff and has been doing it for over 55 years. Oh he still working and says he retired working for fun and to have something to do. I going to see if I can get a top-map to send to you.  This is a picture of my wife and I here in Afghanistan and a picture of DeBoo

I intend to branch out a little this year. I just bought a fishing yak which should open up a lot of water that I have not been able to fish. I am going to hit Williamsport, a lake SW of Lawanceburg, and one up toward Dixon. I think I will try the upper end of PP too. I want to see how it goes before I hit the Duck.

Walt thanks for the input, I need all the help I can get.Let me go a little more into what I'm trying to do.I put fathead minnows, redear and coppernose in the pond in the last month and immediately started to try to get them to eat the floating fish food. I was planning to wait to put the bass in next year because bluegill were so small(1") and at 42 cents each I didn't want them to be dinner for the bass.If I feed the bluegill all they will eat, will they still be stunted?

  • Long Creek Arkie

Walt, thank you very much for taking the time to point out how I was screwing up.A couple of years ago I made the mistake of putting crappie in two ponds and I didn't want to screw up another pond. I will change the feed and next time the fish truck runs I will get the bass. Thanks again.
