Allen; in my area; we bottom bounce jigs;; tipped with minnows;; but also; we use a stinger hook on them;; tie a section of line onto the jig; along with your rod line;; then tie on a small treble hook.  hook the minnow thru the head;  with the jig; then the treble hook; into tail section of the minnow;; gives a LOT better hook ups with sauger !!

I've got a friend on another forum, that fishes for 'eyes at sunset and the first couple hours after that.  He usually catches fish on cranks or jigs (jigs are his own ties).  The fish are usually within feet of the shoreline, so close that he can actually see their eyes glowing underwater.

I've only caught Saugers before.  I will say that the Saugers hit a jig or minnow much harder than the Spotted (Kentucky) Bass that I was catching at the same time.

John; that story is very true!! his kids and friends got together; got some professional help; and had that re-instated; in the record books; it was on our local tv show; tn. wildside about the whole thing ! that record book walleye; was caught at Hartsville Tn. ; about 25 miles from me ! I fish in old hickory lake ; all the time;  the boat ramp; closest one is about 5 miles; furthest one I use is about 15 miles.  Dale Hollow; and Ky lake; ( Ky lake is where we have our rendevou ) are actually back- to back lakes; about a 2 1/2 hour drive !!  time for you and Greg to move to Tn. !!!!! LOL

Carl, how far are you from Old Hickory Lake , and Dale Hollow Lake (reservoir)?

You are right Carl a great story ! 25 lb Walleye !! Not fair , he was fishing for Catfish lol . Life just aint fair sometime but glad the decision was reversed! They ate it LOL must've been 20 meals!!....now is this WORLD RECORD part true?: "Mabry submitted information about the fish to the Tennessee Wildlife Commission (now TWRA) and learned that it was not only a state record, but a world record as well."

The time I got into them after dark in Lake Ontario NY by the Genessee River we got 'Eyes close to top slow retrieving  Husky Jerks. In the Monksville Reservoir years ago I got three 18" on Shad Raps . However ,I think more Walleyes are caught near bottom on Jigs than cranks .I think if I start targeting them I'll try thinking like I do when I go after Perch ,which is near bottom mostly . Outside weed edges in a cove at dusk in October and an overcast late morning  in April were the conditions with the shad rap catches. With the night time Husky jerks the Walleye were keying in on bait ( Mooneyes I believe) at a mud line of the river coming into Lake Ontario.Good luck Jason hope to hear of your catches here this year.
