Do you love big bluegill?
Hello, my name is Harry A. Lamey in Biloxi, Ms. and would like to join the Fl Panhandle Bream Busters. We are not that far away from each other and looks like we share the same type of fishing. I fish for bluegill only with a fly rod and am a avid…Continue

Joey, glad you had a decent trip to Bozeman;s. I just got home this afternoon from Alabama trip. Fished out of Abbe Creek on the Chattahoochee last Thursday. To make a long story short about a mile upriver my motor overheated and I had to shut down. My own mistake trying to bull through a mud/sand bar in the creek fouled up the thermostadt in motor. I didn't know the motor ha\d a thermostadt. My old trusty 1973 Johnson 20 hp would handle a bar like this and flush itself out, but not these new fangled motors with un-needed gizmos on them.
Anyway, after I shut down it was early do decided to just fish down river back to the landing. Caught maybe 15 small bream, not a decent keeper in the bunch. Tried fly rod for about an hour but no go. What was caught was with wigglers.
The motor problem messed up a highly anticipated trip on Friday to Lake Eufaula. Will get the motor fixed and be back up there is a couple of weeks.
I had two reports last week the reds and bass were hitting well in the Point Washington Area. There is a band new ramp there with parking for maybe 5 or 6 rigs. Reall nice.
Panhandle Flyfishers........Nice article in The Destin Log this morning about the Panhandle Flyfishers Association. Was not aware it existed. My just drive down and visit one of their sessions.

Clint: We had to bypass Lost Lake this morning. The ramp is not in good shape and the water was too low for me to pull my boat out with my little Honda CRV. My last attempt a few months ago I had to get a pick-up to hook up to me and pull both the car and boat out. And with all that we still could not get into the lake.It didn't take much help from the pickup but it was necessary. Good thing my buddy from South Port met me there with his PU.
We ended up going to SmokeHouse. Got there about 6:15. Went about 3 or 4 miles up river then fished downstream. Water was slightly stained but in good shape. We fished until 1:30. Fished the main river and several lakes.
The keeper catch was 1 bass about 2 pounds and 5 or 6 bream and warmouth. Beautiful day but bite was poor. Fly fished about 2 hours total and did not get a decent hit, just a few bumps.
We saw 4 other boats. Passed one as soon as we got to the main river. 4 hours later when we came back down river he had moved only about 50 yards. Made a mental note on that spot.....
I rarely fish on Saturday but may give it a shot this weekend if the weather is anything like today.
Will be hitting the Chattahoochee at Abbe Creek late next week if nothing happens.
Had high hopes of fishing Lost Lake tomorrow but current river level prediction is down to near 4 ft... That means it will be difficult to launch anything but a small light Jon or a yak.
Two days ago 8 ft was predicted for Thursday. Wonder where all the water went or did NOAA just make a bad call on predicted rainfall up in Alabama.
So. won't waste our time on Lost Lake and go on down to Smokehouse and give that a try.
Thanks Jeff for the ramp info. I'm still hoping to get over there soon. It's been one thing after another which has delayed a trip.
Just got back to De Funiak this afternoon after a week in Dothan and with a seriously lighter wallet from buying hearing aids. You could buy a pretty good river boat and motor for what these things cost.
Fished the Chattahoochee River out of Abbie Creek which is about 28 miles from Dothan. Made two afternoon trip while the dam about 10 to 15 miles upstream was generating power, thus the river was up and running at a good clip. According to what the locals told me this is the best time to fish, especially for catfish. This is a place you have to learn from ground zero. It's much different than the Choctawhatchee. Water is very clear and deep. Found tons of fish on the sonar and most were in 10 to 20 foot water. I learned the technique is tight-line on or near the bottome for cat and bream. The bottom has a lot of hard sand and rock so shellcrackers are reported to be everywhere. However, all of the anglers I spoke with are having the same problem catching as we are over here on the Choctaw. They tell the same story, heat.......
I did talk to one angler who said he prefers top fish for bream when the dam is not generating and the water is hardly moving.
The Hooch has several dams upstream from Hwy 90 at Seminole. When there is no power generation going on the river is more like a huge lake in between each dam. I have to go back in a couple of weeks and want to try to still water.
While it was easy to find fish with the sonar all I caught was two challens about 1 1/2 lb ea and maybe 25 to 30 small bream non-keepers and one keeper shellcracker. I will have different tackle next time to do a better job tight-lining on the bottom.
I did try my fly rod for maybe an hour yesterday afternoon late but not a single bite.
The Hooch banks on both sides are steep and many are linestone rock. It can be 20 ft deep 10 ft from a bank wall. Not nearly the cover along bank as we have in the Choctaw, but enough to provide fish cover.
Was told the best fishing is up closer to the dam at lower end of Lake Eufaula. It's about a 45 mile drive from Dothan buy I hope to try that area.
