Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Well, my giant Sunnies are not up thick on beds yet. I had to work hard for I think 8 or 9 Sunfish.... all Bluegill, maybe one hybrid Bluegill X Red Ear.

 

But I did bring home 3 Bluegill for dinner. Put them in a 1 gal ziplock, hung it on my scale, and they went 4.3 lbs ! They were two @ 1.3 lbs, and 1 @ 1.7 ! Big Gills, even for this place ! Nearly all of the "really big" Sunnies I caught there last year, were Red Ears.

But here is the kicker.....

 

I was talking to (or trying to talk to... he spoke very poor English) an Asian guy at the ramp. I've seen him before, and I know he knows what he's doing. He said he has only been getting a few himself, and he said > two more weeks (with confidence).

 

Then he says, he caught a GIANT last week.... Now, I have heard of Red Ears from this place before, over 4 lbs......

So he tells me, he caught a 4 1/2 lb'er !!!! So again, with his poor English, I was like "A red Ear Sunfish ? Over 4 lbs" ? And he said, "Yes ! 4 1/2.... We weighed it" !

 

Heck, even if this guy was just blowing smoke {and I kinda' don't think he was} I know they are in there. I've heard of at least 4 over 4 lbs coming from there.... And I'm telling you guys, if I ever get a 4+ lb'er, I will have to get a replica made for sure ! That would have to be close to as big a deal as my 18.4 lb PB Largemouth.....

 

Unbelievable !

 

Hope they turn on full blast soon !

SCORE!!! Nice job...... any photos?

Nah..... I guess I should have taken a few. Heck, the 1.7 is really close to my biggest Bluegill ! They just don't seem so crazy big, compared to the 2-3+lb Red Ears from this place !

These were not near so pretty as that "peachy" colored one I caught last week either.

 

Next week, I'll try to put my mind towards some good photos.....
