Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have lurked for a while and really enjoy the photos on the site. I have atached some photos of my biggest bluegill to date. I have no size or weight measurements so educated guesses will be appreciated. Anyone fish in AL a lot on here?

Hello and welcome to the site Matt..my two pennies on a guesstimate comparing stuff in the pictures like the shades, the rod and reel, the size and position of your hands etc. (with a measuring tape in front of me for hand position comparison) I'd say you've got easily a 10 inch bg hope others add their input for you...nice catch & a beautiful fish :D
Thanks a lot Henry. I thought I had a bass when it hit my fly, and when I pulled it in I was like, "Holy crap! That's a bluegill." It was the first time I had even seen a really big one. Doesn't compare to a lot of the monsters I've seen on here, but it means a lot to me. It was a fun day for sure. Now I have the big bluegill bug. Other than saltwater fish, panfish are my absolute favorite fish to target. I just am new at trying to do it!

They look to be ten-inch, one-pound class fish. Very nice!

Like, when we goin'?

Yea I think 5" is a dead on estimate for the height. I will measure the fish gripper to see how long it is. My original estimate from that picture was 11" if the gripper is 12", but I am biased!
Hello from Ky! Nice Gills! Real nice!!!!!!
Great look'n fish, look's like a fun fish to take with a fly rod.
Welcome to BigBluegill Matt. Good to have you here. Looks like you know how to fish for big 'gills.
Matt,
I'i'm new here as well and from the looks of things you have found a great spot.
keep posting and I think I'll learn a thing or two from you.

Bill
Thanks Bill and welcome! Alabama has literally countless bodies of water (streams, rivers, lakes, etc) and where I am the closest thing I have found is a state lake (105 acres). It's a lot more water than I am used to fishing (accustomed to fishing small 3-5 acres ponds). This makes locating the fish a lot harder and I have recently been lucky. I am restricted to shore most of the time because I head over right after work and don't have time to load up my kayak. However, when I can go again with my kayak and get to the other side, it is going to be epic. There will be crappie, bass, and bluegill galore. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself! Haha
