Do you love big bluegill?
Got up this morning to find fresh snow and 18 degrees. Finally, this evening, it had warmed up to 43 degrees so I grabbed my gear and headed out. Caught 8 HBG, which was OK, but the surprising part was where I caught them.....in the shallows, about 6' from shore. I opened the drain on the pond Monday night, to bring it down to normal pool, which means the minnows lost their hiding spots......and the HBG were up in the warmer, shallower, water feasting.
I took them on Gulp minnows, beneath a float.....at a depth of one foot! Water temps were 47 degrees on the surface over deeper water, but probably higher than that in the shallow, dark bottomed areas where I found the fish.
