Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Best time all year.  Tons of mid sized, 7-8 1/2”, in the back of the shallow pockets and larger fish hanging out in 10’ of water where there are may flies on overhanging willows.  looks like the peak fly hatch is on and will probably have a week or two left.  there are some fish still spawning as well.  1/32 oz beetle spin in white/gulp maggot and 1/32 oz popeye hair jig(black red) tipped with a gulp chartreuse waxie worked well.  it had to have the waxie for some reason or they would touch it.  maybe a taste factor

kind of a strange year, the end of May wasnt that good. There didnt seem to be much of a prespawn and they just ran in made beds and left, no guarding.  its almost like the bass and channel cats all tried to spawn at exactly the same time.  June was a little better with evening fish coming up on pea gravel and feeding on snails and tiny mussels.

i dont pressure beds but i do throw some to kind of get a feel of what the population is doing and the 5 mile stretch that i fish seem to be doing well.  the few beds we checked were in 2ft of water because of the draw down.

like i said strange year.  kept a few 6-8” fish for the table that were feeding on the may flies and around wood cover.
