Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have been experimenting with what I call 'hybrid' jigs for panfish, that is...jigs that are made or fashioned with more than one basic component to create a new, and hopefully, fish catching lure. Examples would be a hairjig with both hair/rubber legs. Or a ledhead jig tied with hackle, like a dry fly. Again yet would be the use of plastics and rubber legs, or plastics and hair. The possibilities are endless.

I invite all the jig tyers out there to post your ideas, thoughts, photos and favorites in this discussion. I know LedHed has an innovative flair, and I am excited to see what shows up! Here is my latest 'hackle jig' that has a plastic tail Super glued to the hackles near the head. The idea is to get a super slow fall on this 1/32 oz jig with movement on both the hackles and the filament tail.

Good work Jim!

Very nice.  I like to do that same thing.  Buy different materials and then sit down and make up something, Fun!

good looking jig  I started tying jigs like that for ice fishing this winter.  had great suscess with them.

waiting for the snow to go away so can try them on open water as a droper fly

I have an older friend, a legend on PA's Pymatuning res., who has taught me to tie a 1/32 or 1/16 oz leadhead with a natural, raw wool body and an overlay of fabric-store satin & metallic material (shiny cloth). This old guy has caught about half a million crappies & bluegills on these jigs over the past 40 years! This past week I took the 1/32ozers out just at ice out (mon) and tho bluegills weren't too active yet,my son & I in 5 days (3to 4 hrs each day) caught & released an actual count of 409 rainbow trout.

Photos please.

Badger, I'm terrible with getting photos onto forums, but if you'll check the "vertical jigging master" thread on the fishing section of jigcraft.com you can see photos of the jigs.

i got a couple i will post later

here are 2 jigs and 2 flies i would use for crappies or warmouths, tied with the same materials.i can get deep with the jigs or swim the flies shallow over the weeds or sunken trees and brush
