Fly fishing, So I bought it! Now what do I do?

Here I sit with 2 brand new pflueger trion 5 wt rods, 2 brand new pflueger auto reels, 4 packs of coutland WF6F line, and absolutely no clue how to get it on there. Do I need backing, Aint there supposed to be an eyelet, Whats the cheap way to make some tippets, how do I tie these knots, and LORD SOMEBODY HELP ME ITS ALLMOST TIME TO FISH >>>>>> I SPENT ALL THIS MONEY AND I HAVE NO CLUE HOW TO GET IT PUT TOGETHER!

 

  I guess this is my fault since I did the discount shopping and hunting for the ultimate deal in price. If I woulda bought it all from my local fishing shop as one set up and had them to string it Id be looking easily at close to $160 in the rods... $100 in the reels, and another $160 in the line. They woulda strung it and put it all together for me but I shopped and shopped all winter long and ended up with only $50 in the line ($10 a pack on sale for march madness at bass pro... They were sold out 3 hours after opening) , $75 for both rods with shipping, and $60 with shipping on the reels. I got $185 bucks in my 2 setups vs $420. Thanks to all the knowhow on BIGBLUEGILL.com I know somebody on here can tell me I did a great job at saving $235 and yall can show more or direct me to web sites with videos and illistratutions on how to put these things together! Im sure there are a few of you that have your own.

I hear ya Jim! Thats what I grew up doing. Ole glow bug. Paw paw used 8wts. He loved to locate the gills with a fly rod and then once found work his way into the big schools and beds with a few 15ft cane poles and catalpa worms.

Jim, I agree and you can teach an old dog new tricks after buying tapered leader and using nail knots for many years here are a couple of links that changed the way I set up.

backing is helpful it will actually make your line take up faster by increasing the diameter of the spool.  This is good should you accidentally hook into a big bass that strips your line off.

I love the loop!  I don't see too well, and trying to tie nail knots in the boat or on the bank are a pain in the ...  with the loops I only replace the tippet material as necessary.  I use four or six pound stren for my tippet I did stumble on some actual tippit for $1.00 a spool at the Orvis store in Williamsburg so I stocked up with five rolls, I'll be really high end this year.  I use flourocarbon for the furled leader/tippet on one rod as flourocarbon sinks where as monofilament tends to float. I use this instead of sinking tip line but the waters I fish most aren't very deep so this sinks quickly with the wet flies or jigs

Congrat's on getting your 1st fly rod. Yes fly rods/reels can be very expensive and line. I think you got a great buy man for $185.00 for 2 fly rods. I have an Orvis fly rod outfit that cost $275.00 but I love it. Yes you do need backing if I ain't mistaken about 75yards of backing. Tie a arbor knot to your reel with your backing. You must connect your backing to your fly line by doing an albright knot. Depends on your fly line if you have a welded loop already on, if not tie a nail knot connecting your fly line to your leader. From there I tie a surgeon's knot wrapped 3time around connecting your leader to your tippet. That's it with getting started. You need plenty of leader's and tippet's (mainly for trout). But for Bluegill's im using a 6ft leader 5x equal's 4-lbs, with a regular fishing line 2ft 4-lb mono line and a the fly. If you really what to I also use regular mono fishing line 6ft 6-lb make a loop tie it to your fly line than use regular 2ft 4-lb mono , it saves alot of money than using your tippet's/leader's.   Well here goes!! I am a fly fisherman but I do not use auto reels. Auto reels do not generally have enough space available to put  backing on them. If you did get a big one that took you into your backing chances are that it would wind the spring to tight and break your reel. SO forget the backing and the the end of the fly line to the reel with an arbor knot. You only need one line per rod.

If you go to the catalog get some  leader to fly line connectors get some 71/2 3x leader son the end of leader make a loop knot. Now buy some 6# test Stren  Cut about 36 inches off and make a loop in the end.now loop the stren to the leader and you have a tippet to the your fly to. Look for the closest Federation of fly fishers meeting and go to a couple.   Jim Ducy
