I Never have .I will follow this discussion because I've been thinking about doing the same thing!

i guess a place to start would be to feed them with pieces of a broken up piece of hard bread to attract and then start fishing

Dwayne,

I am planning to try it this year. Someone told me to get a gadget at the pet store that you use to throw a tennis ball for a dog to retrieve (looks like a minature lacrosse racket but solid plastic). Use it to throw fish food or dry dog food ahead of your boat or out from shore if bank fishing.

Can't wait to try it.

SeaRay

I use a spackle knife to mix and fling catfish chum .I may try the same for Pannies from shore.

Ray, That sounds better than just an old slingshot.

Ray and John, I think a lot of carp bolle recepies would work, or trout pellets from feed store. I have read, where chumming is used a lot in match bankfishing. An easy chum would be, corn meal, bread crumbs, flour, somkind of sweetner and coffee cremer, I would add sparkles from baking section, I cannot wait to try chumming.

GROUNDBAIT RECIPES?John Wilkins is the guy to get into this discussion .

This is not the same as you guys are talking about but it really seems like it would work to me...

Take a can or dog food in the spring or summer "warm", open it and hand it just off the water from a thin wire under your super secret brim hole and leave it for a few weeks,,, The idea is the maggots will start to grow and as they try to leave they fall in the water and the gills will come from all over to wait and eat them..., Now I havent tried it but it sounds like a good idea to me...,

If you try it let us know how it works,,,

John

That is a modern and sanitary version of a trick I heard about but never had the gall to try. Old timers would hang a hog head above the water and the maggots did the rest. I figured you had to fish upwind of this thing after a couple of hot summer days. Whewww!! Never wanted to try it, but the dog food might be OK.

SeaRay

i've actually done that before.  not with a hog's head, but with road kill.  the problem is the smell.  but if you have an iron gut and no sense of smell it can work in your favor.  i have seen bass fisherman working the shoreline and as soon as they get within smelling distance of your honey hole, they either pick up the pace or go completely around it.

HA Ha!!!!!

John, I like you idea, and I will try that,SeaRay, I agree with you about hogs head, I had always heard to find yourself some nice roadkill and hang it from a tree and let the flies do the rest. But I did not want to waste some good roadkill.HAHA

Thanks for all the relies to this, I am goin to try chumming this year, I have chummed for catfish, but never gills.

i have had success with crushed eggshells. Broadcast them from an anchored position.  i just pitch 'em by hand all around the boat and then fish your regular livebait as usual. I believe curiosity brings them in to look at the slowly fluttering and sinking pieces of eggshell and then they notice your bait. this is a clearer water tactic.

Jim, sounds like a good idea and makes sense, what you say

Thanks

Dwayne
