Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

When I got out of work, I decided to hit up the pond before going home.  It was to windy for a fly rod, so I pulled out my UL rod and grabbed the box with my homemade spinners in it.

I walked over to the west side of the pond, so I would have the wind at my back.  I had my size 0 knockoff of a Mepps on.  It doesn't weigh much, so I wanted to give it some help to get out there.

First couple of casts didn't result in anything.  Then I threw over in a different direction.  Within a second or two, my pole loaded up and started throbbing.  I landed a nice little Bluegill X Green Sunfish Hybrid.  Two casts later, and I caught another one.  After that fish was released, I made a throw in a bad direction, and realized my homemade lure was heading for some weeds.  I stopped the cast in mid-air, and luckily, it landed in a gap between some cattails.  I started quickly reeling it in, basically skipping the lure over the water's surface.  Wouldn't you know, but a "larger" fish made a slap at it on top.  I made another cast just outside the little weed point and started retrieving.  Sure enough, I got a hit, and it was pulling the pole around more than the sunnies did.  I wasn't surprised when I landed that little LMB.

Always a thrill for me to catch fish on flies I've tied myself.  I imagine you're ecstatic catching those on home made spinner baits!  Way to go Allen!!

Wait until I post the pics of the fish from today!

Could you post a picture of the Spinnerbait itself? I cant really see it very well. I would love to see it. Nice fish!!

Sorry about the wait.  I wanted to redo the dressing on the hook.  I realized I was out of size 8 trebles, so I had to remove the hook from the lure (easily done, it's on a split ring), cut the old dressing off, and tie on some new stuff.

My original dressed treble had a red strike attractor of dyed-red goose quill barbs.  Unfortunately, the dye was bleeding off into the white marabou.  On the new one, I went with some red Krystal Flash so it won't bleed.

Great looking spinner Allen there will be many fish fall prey to it, they always worked good for me but for some reason I haven't used one for quit awhile kinda stupid on my part cause I know they catch fish. Great job.

I use to love them inline spinners. Don't know where you bought your supplies but when I use to make them I got my stuff at Netcraft no surprise to anybody but they had great bodies and you could get real close to the Mepps at a fraction of the price. Probably got some of them laying around here yet made them for our whole group cause we use to fish Canada every Memorial weekend. Them were good old days brings back some old memories Thanks Allen.

Yep, Dick, I'm ordering from Netcraft.

I love a spinner, any kind. Just something about them... Probably nostalgic familiarity.
Been throwing them my whole life.
