Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I was wondering if you can catch BG when it gets dark, I did read that they find food mostly by sight.

Always helpful, Allen.
I've never considered floats for night cat fishing. But, why not? Catfish are predators and always on the prowl. Suspending a deep and shallow hook gang from a large float could be useful.
Walmart you say? Another goodie to buy - - yes!

thorough as always David and Allen!

Ha! Thanks John

thanks mark for clearing this up-its not that gills dont feed at night, they have poor eye sight compared to other fish.i see the fish a lot in the clear water i fish and they do have some blind spots also.i have caught blue gill at night fishing for crappies and bass.i just dont think they can see our bait.

I have only caught gills at night two times. In both instances it was while catfishing in Lake Lanier using liver. My buddy and I kept getting hits and missing them, when finally he hooked a gill. I guess the larger hook size made hooking them so difficult. I switched to a smaller hook, and managed to catch about a half dozen decent gills that first night. The next time we fished that area, I baited up a smaller hook and had caught about the same amount as the first night.

So its safe to say they DO feed at night?

Liver is not exactly a lively bait, not something to draw their attention through activity or water disturbance, anyway. But it does exude an enticing, protein based scent. My son has caught a lot of gills on liver, too.

This suggests they are using their OTHER senses for night feeding... smell in this particular case. Maybe it just that we dont fish for them enough at night.

I've caught bluegills at night while ice fishing many times. And using a glow jig helps.

I once saw an older lady catch alot of gills/rios on little pieces of beef liver......

Yeah, mike, it's something that comes up when "alternative" baits are mentioned.
Now, this is just me, but if bluegill are around, they are gonna see whatever comes within their circle of vision. Liver has that wonderful, protein scent that
must surely make a fish want to bite.
And that's the only reason I can think it would get a bite at night. You know I'm now dying to try it!

Me too! I'll use my headlamp and give it a try!

I have really enjoyed reading all the replies! Thanks a lot for sharing!
